Spare a prayer for Dave Roberts

Join us here at Ramble On in sending best wishes to Dave Roberts. The former Boston Red Sox outfielder revealed today that he is battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is currently undergoing treatment.

Reversing The Curse never would have been possible without Roberts in 2004. His stolen base in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series set the table for Bill Mueller’s game-tying single and sparked Boston’s comeback from an 0-3 deficit against the New York Yankees.

To think of all we would have missed if Roberts hadn’t covered those 90 feet between first and second base on that cold night at Fenway Park as quickly as he did. Without Roberts there are no heroics from David Ortiz on back-to-back nights, no gutless A-Rod slap of Bronson Arroyo, no grand slam by Johnny Damon against former and current Yankees’ goat Javier Vazquez, no bloody sock worn by Curt Schilling, no brilliance from Derek Lowe, no games finished by Keith Foulke and no Rolling Rallies that spilled into the Charles River.

Our lives are better for having seen those things. We hope we get to see more, and Roberts is a big part of the reason we’ve gotten to this point. Say a prayer in his honor and keep him in your thoughts.
