Youkilis done for the season

Posted by Bill Koch on August 5, 2010

Those hoping to see more magic out of Mike Lowell are going to have plenty more chances to see it now.

Kevin Youkilis will have surgery on his right thumb on Friday and is out for the season. Youkilis’ injury is just one more kick in the teeth to the Boston Red Sox, a walking MASH unit who have lost Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia, Jason Varitek, Victor Martinez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Cameron, Josh Beckett and Daisuke Matsuzaka for long stretches on the DL this season.

People who follow us here at Ramble On know how we feel – this team and its bloated $170 million payroll wasn’t going to be good enough even at full strength to stop the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. Now the Yankees are going to have the honor of finishing the Red Sox off when Boston heads to The Bronx for a weekend series. Losing Youkilis takes away one of the few players on this version of the Red Sox who appears to play the game with some passion, and that’s the sort of fight that Boston will be missing while trying to erase the considerable lead built by the Yankees and Rays. Theo Epstein’s bridge to 2011 just got detonated.

When’s the preseason opener for the New England Patriots?
